Lockdown extended in Damak

The lockdown in Damak municipality has been extended by a week, as Corona Virus infection continues to rise. An all-party meeting of the Corona Prevention and Control Coordination Committee on Saturday took this decision. Accordingly, the lockdown will remain in effect until August 29. The previous lockdown period that began on August 16 was supposed to end on Saturday. However, 16 new cases of COVID-19 were reported on Saturday itself, giving ground to the decision, said deputy Mayor Geeta Adhikari. The total number of infections in Damak has reached 66 as of Saturday. Of them, 14 have recovered while the remaining are in hospital and home isolation, said officer at the health division of the municipality, Nagendra Bhattarai....

Meeting of India-Nepal Joint Working Group on Oil and Gas cooperation

The 2nd meeting of the India-Nepal Joint Working Group on Oil and Gas cooperation met through video conferencing on 13th August 2020. The meeting was co-chaired by Sh B N Reddy, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India and Mr Prem Kumar Shrestha, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Supplies, Government of Nepal. Representatives from the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, Indian Public Sector Oil and Gas companies such as IOCL, GAIL and HPCL, Ministries of Finance and Foreign Affairs of Nepal and Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) participated in the JWG meeting. The meeting expressed satisfaction on the functioning of the Motihari-Amlekhgunj Petroleum Products Pipeline, which was jointly inaugurated and operationalized by Prime Ministers of both countries in September 2019. The pipeline, first of its kind in the South Asia region, has been supplying majority of the fuel requirement of Nepal to Amlekhgunj Depot of NOC. Both sides also discussed future areas of cooperation in the petroleum energy sector, including possibilities of new pipelines for supply of petroleum products to Nepal. The JWG mechanism was set up in 2017 to further strengthen the long standing cooperation between IOCL and NOC and diversify areas of cooperation between the two countries in the Oil and Gas sector. NAC aircraft off to Dubai to bring stranded travelers

The Nepalis left stranded in Dubai airport after a chartered flight was cancelled will be brought home today. A wide body aircraft A-330 of Nepal Airlines left for Dubai this morning and is scheduled to return with the passengers at 4:15 in the afternoon.   The NAC aircraft with more than 260 passengers will arrive from Dubai to Kathmandu this afternoon, said NAC spokesperson Archana Khadka. The NAC’s scheduled flight on August 18 had been cancelled by the government citing lack of quarantine facility for the incoming passengers. As a result, the NAC aircraft returned to Kathmandu empty, leaving the passengers stranded in the airport. Following widespread criticism including by the affected passengers, the cabinet decided to allow a rescue flight to bring them home. The government has also decided to resume regular international flights starting September 1. However, only Nepali nationals, diplomatic staffers, UN staffers from the countries with easy PCR facility for Corona Virus testing will be allowed to come to Nepal in the flights.   Chartered flights will continue from other countries, as per the recommendation of the concerned diplomatic mission. One more succumbs to Corona Virus in Chitwan

One more person has died of Corona Virus infection in Chitwan. A 65-year-old woman of Hetauda sub-metropolis, Makwanpur died during treatment at the Old medical college hospital in Bharatpur-10 on Saturday.   However, she was diagnosed with the deadly virus only after her death. The swab sample had been taken on August 17 but she died before the report arrived, said information officer at Bharatpur hospital Liladhar Poudel. She had been admitted to the hospital for treatment of liver-related ailment. Also on Saturday, another man who died while undergoing treatment at the same hospital was diagnosed with the Corona Virus infection.   The 75-year-old from Hetauda died on Thursday night but was known to be positive only on Saturday morning....

‘One person, one mask campaign’

The Annapurna rural municipality of Kaski has begun a ‘one person, one mask’ campaign. The campaign is being carried out in the doorsteps of the people considering the increasing cases of COVID-19.   The one person, one mask campaign has been made mandatory for all the 11 wards in the rural municipality, said Chair Yubaraj Kunwar. Accordingly, 35,000 masks have already been distributed with another 35,000 planned for distribution. Likewise, the rural municipality has distributed 1,500 brochures containing information about the risk of Corona Virus infection and efforts to stay away from it. Encouraging health hygiene, the people have also been provided with 7030 soaps to promoting hand washing. The local people’s representatives, tol development organisations, mother’s group, school teachers among others have been mobilized to run the campaign.   The campaign has been effective and people are being increasingly aware about the virus, said Chair Kunwar....
