NWA founding president Singh remembered

Kathmandu – The Nepal Women Association (NWA), Kathmandu, organised a programme here this morning to pay tribute to the late Mangaladevi Singh, the founding president of NWA. At the programme held in commemoration of her 22nd Memorial Day, Nepali Congress leader Prakash Man Singh laid a wreath on her image at Shobha Bhagawati. The prominent democratic fighter who always raised her voice for the rights of Nepali women had significant contribution to the movements launched in the country against the totalitarian Rana regime and for the restoration of democracy. “The constitution of Nepal has guaranteed many rights to women, but women need to fight themselves for the implementation,” he asserted. He went on to say that the government formed with the help of two-thirds majority failed to address people’s issues. NC Kathmandu president Sabuj (Krishna) Baniya said the late Singh had a great role in transforming Ganeshman Singh into a supreme leader. Child martyr Khuna cremated

Kanchanpur – Fourteen-year-old Shani Khuna of Bhagatpur, Bhimdatta municipality, who was killed in police firing a few days ago during the people’s demonstrations against the rape and murder of local Nirmala Pant, was cremated today. Earlier, the government offered the status of martyrdom to the boy, announcing to give Rs one million each to the families of both Khuna and Pant. Province 7 Assembly member Tara Lama Tamang and (municipality) Mayor Surendra Bista reached the local Brahmadev Ghat along the Mahakali River to pay last tribute to the mortal body of Khuna. Curfew imposed again at local level in Kanchanpur

Bhimdattanagar – Curfew order has been imposed at Bhimdatta municipality of Kanchanpur. Tensions have run high here since the murder of 13-year-old Nirmala Pant of Kholti of Bhimdatta municipality-2. Her body was retrieved from a sugarcane field on July 27. The municipality has been under the curfew order for few days, following the death of a 14-year-old boy in police firing in course of the public protest against the murder of Nirmala. The curfew imposed at various places of ward nos 4, 6 and 18 was earlier lifted for five hours and the new order has come into force from 10:00 am today. NA’s Heath Institute provides scholarship of Rs 62.4 million

Kathmandu – Nepal Army Institute of Health Sciences provided the scholarship of Rs 62.4 million in a year alone. The Army Welfare Fund has informed that the Institute provided full scholarship to the students of 96 non-military families in the last fiscal year. Director at the Fund, Brigadier General Raghu Bhandari, shared the information that students belonged to various streams as medical study, nursing and medical poly technique. There are altogether 8,338 students in various streams in the army institutes run by the Fund. Among these, 2,887 are the students from the non-military families. Meanwhile, Nepal Army has also provided free education to Sonish Awal of Bhaktapur Muldhoka, who was rescued live after 22 hours of the Gorkha earthquake. Lalbakaiya boat capsize – two bodies found

Gaur –  Two dead bodies were fished out from the Lalbakaiya River in which a boat carrying over 25 people capsized on Saturday evening. According to the police, bodies of two women– Runa Kurmi Patel of Ishanath municipality-3 and Shanti Devi Saha of Gaur municipality-4 — were recovered today. Three people remain missing. The missing ones are Om Prakash Chandrabanshi, Indudevi Patel and Usma Patel, Superintendent of Police Kedar Dhakal said. Among them, Om Prakash was an assistant sailor. The boat capsized at Tikuliyaghat of Gaur municipality-4 after hitting a pillar erected in course of the construction of a bridge over the Lal Bakaiya River as it was en route to Gaur from Aurhiya of Ishanath municipality.
