Payment to Melamchi Water Supply Project sub-contractors yet to be finalised

The status of payment which the Italian company, CMC, has to make to the subsidiary contractors and suppliers is still not decided. The CMC was the main contractor of the Melamchi Water Supply Project before it abandoned the project in the middle. The Ministry of Water Supply and Sanitation has stated that although the wages remaining to be paid to the local labours has been finalized, the payment to the sub-contractors and suppliers has not been and preparations were underway for the same. The Ministry has formed a technical committee to study about the dues the Italian company owes on the basis of claims for payment made by the subsidiary contractors and suppliers. Ministry spokesperson Ritesh Kumar Shakya said it will take some more time to pay the sub-contractor companies for the materials they have supplied for the project. “Verification is being done to check whether the claims made by the companies for payment of their dues are correct or not. The payment process will be forwarded once the verification is concluded,” he said. The Italian company had not paid the workers and the sub-contractors when it left the project all of a sudden in the middle. Since then the sub-contractors and suppliers had been demanding that either the government should make CMC pay them or it itself pay their dues. They had also obstructed the project’s work calling...

CTEVT turns into place for employment only, rues Minister Pokharel

Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Giriraj Mani Pokharel has expressed his disappointment saying the Council for Technical Education and Vocational Training (CTEVT) has been limited to a place only for the staffers to fulfill their job rituals. He said so while addressing the 32nd anniversary function of CTEVT at Sanothimi on Monday. Minister Pokharel is also the CTEVT Chair. Stating CTEVT has not been able to carry out works as its name suggested, the Education Minister wondered whether it was only a place for the staffers to fulfill their job rituals and pass time. He expressed worry saying CTEVT has not been able to produce and train adequate workforce required for the country. “Although CTEVT has expressed commitment to produce skilled and qualified human resources, it has not been able to produce the required number of human resources,” he lamented and wondered whether it was only place to while away time carrying out the ritualistic works. Education Minister Pokharel said although the CTEVT has been giving temporary affiliation to the private sector so far, it has not given interest towards making that into permanent. He reasoned that not giving permanent affiliation to the private sector was responsible for it not being able to produce the highly skilled and qualified workforce to the required extent. He also strongly denied ever interfering in the CTEVT in providing affiliation to the...
