SAARC Secretary General Weerakoon assumes office

Esala Ruwan Weerakoon of Sri Lanka assumed charge of office as the Secretary General of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). He is the fourteenth Secretary General of SAARC. Weerakoon is a career diplomat. Prior to this appointment, he was the Senior Additional Secretary to the President of Sri Lanka. He has also served as the Foreign Secretary and Secretary at the Ministry of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs, Sri Lanka. In his 32 years of diplomatic service, he has also served as Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to India and Ambassador to Norway. Weerakoon holds an MSc degree in Economics from the University of London. State 2 preparing to finalise name and permanent capital through voting

Preparations have been made to finalise the permanent capital and the name of State 2 through voting in the State Assembly after it could not forge consensus on this matter The State Assembly Secretariat stated that the name and the permanent capital of the State would be decided through voting on March 6. The State Assembly would be informed about the process of finalizing the name and the permanent capital a day before the voting takes place. State Assembly’s speaker Saroj Kumar Yadav said the meeting of the State Assembly has been called for March 5 after being stalled for nearly three months. He said the Assembly would be informed about the voting process for determining the name and permanent capital on that day. Speaker Yadav said the voting process would be started at 8 am on March 6. He said four proposals have been registered for naming the State while three proposals have been registered for determining the permanent capital. According to him, discussions would be held on all the proposals and these would be put to a vote for endorsement of any two by a two-third majority votes. Although all the parties are agreed on the permanent capital of State 2, there is no consensus regarding the name of the State. Former CA member Ghimire dies in accident in India

Member in the then Constituent Assembly (CA) and Jhapa’s senior communist leader Dharma Prasad Ghimire has been found dead at Bagdogra of West Bengal, India. Area Police Office Kakarbhitta’s Deputy Superintendent of Police Rajendra Pokhrel confirmed that Ghimire’s lifeless body was retrieved by the Indian Police at Bagdogra along the Western Asian Highway, three kilometers away from the Bagdogra Police Office. He was one of the ‘Nakkhu jail breakers’. According to the police, his death was due to a strike from a vehicle which is yet to be identified. Ghimire had died on the spot, DSP Pokhrel said quoting the Indian Police. The 65-year-old Ghimire, a resident of Duhagadhi of Mechinagar-13 in Jhapa had been under medication for depression for the past eight years. He, three days ago, had left home for Charali market, for ‘shaving beard’, and had lost a contact with the family by all means. The body has been kept at the Bagdogra Medical College. His younger brother Narendra reached there and identified the body. Ghimire had been elected to the first Constituent Assembly from the Jhapa-1 constituency in the general election held in 2008, representing the then CPN (Maoist). Covid-19 fallout: Government suspends labour permits for time-being

The government has suspended issuing labour permit for overseas employment for the time-being. It is said the government took this decision as the coronavirus (Covid-19) which broke out from China has spread globally. Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security Rameshwor Raya Yadav said the issuing of labour permit has been suspended for the present until the fear of Covid-19 subsided. He added that Nepali workers are not to be supplied to countries which are at risk of Covid-19 infection in the context of the government’s directives not to go abroad except for emergency works. “The government has urged all not to travel abroad except for emergency and the Supreme Court has also ordered suspension of flights to the coronavirus affected countries. For this reason, we have for sure suspended issuing labour permit for some time,” he said, adding that issuing labour permits would be resumed once the coronavirus terror subsided.
