Kathmandu — In a groundbreaking achievement for Nepal’s medical community, Dr. Rashmisha Maharjan has become the first Nepali doctor to graduate from the prestigious European Master in Disaster Medicine (EMDM).
She completed the advanced program in Italy and graduated in Tokyo, Japan, as part of the 2023 batch. This accomplishment marks Nepal’s entry into the global list of countries with certified disaster medicine professionals, with Dr. Maharjan now officially recognized among an elite group of global experts.
Disaster medicine is a specialized field focused on providing medical care during and after disasters, while also leading efforts in preparedness, response, planning, and recovery. Remarkably, Dr. Maharjan is not only Nepal’s first EMDM graduate, but also holds the distinction of being the youngest academically qualified disaster medicine specialist in the world.
Her academic journey began at Little’s Angel School in Nepal. She later earned her MBBS degree from Three George University of Medical Sciences in China in 2019. After returning to Nepal, she completed her medical house officer service at KIST Medical College Teaching Hospital and the Manmohan Cardiovascular, Thoracic and Transplant Center under Tribhuvan University’s Institute of Medicine.
Currently, Dr. Maharjan is serving as the Chief Coordinator of the Nepal Disaster and Emergency Medicine Center (NADEM Center). She also holds the role of Secretary General of the Nepal College of Emergency Medicine (NCEM) and works as a Training Coordinator and Instructor with the American Heart Association’s Training Center at the Nepal Disaster and Emergency Healthcare International Training Center (NADEH ITC).
Her achievements are guided by her father, Dr. Ramesh Kumar Maharjan, a senior Emergency Medicine Specialist and the founder of NADEM Center, who also serves as the President of NCEM. She is also supported by her mother, Reena Maharjan, who is the Chief Administrator of NADEM Center, NADEH ITC, and NCEM. Dr. Rashmisha credits her family, especially the M FAMILY House, for their unwavering support and dedication to the development of disaster and emergency medicine in Nepal and beyond.
Dr. Rashmisha Maharjan’s success is a historic step for Nepal in the global healthcare landscape and serves as an inspiring example of leadership and excellence in disaster medicine.
