Kathmandu- Germany has announced a comprehensive assistance package worth around €8 million for Nepal to support communities affected by the recent Bhotekoshi floods and assist the country’s recovery efforts.
According to the German Embassy in Kathmandu, the support combines emergency humanitarian assistance, development cooperation and funding through European and multilateral mechanisms.
Germany is providing more than €500,000 in emergency relief supplies through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism at the request of the Government of Nepal. The assistance includes kitchen sets, tarpaulins, mosquito nets, drinking-water equipment and camp beds.
An additional €200,000 in humanitarian assistance will be provided directly to two civil society organizations. One project will focus on the health and well-being of pregnant women, new mothers and newborns affected by the disaster, while another will support income opportunities for affected households, infrastructure recovery and improved conditions in displacement camps.
Germany has also mobilized €7.35 million in development assistance through its cooperation with Nepal. The funding will be provided by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and implemented by GIZ.
The development assistance will focus on maintaining access to essential health, energy and water services, while also supporting Nepal’s longer-term efforts to build climate- and disaster-resilient infrastructure.
Germany is also supporting humanitarian efforts through multilateral mechanisms. The UN Central Emergency Response Fund has mobilized US$2.5 million, while the European Union has mobilized €2.5 million in humanitarian funding following the disaster.
The German Embassy also acknowledged the contribution of German civil society organizations already working on the ground in Nepal, often with support from donations raised among people in Germany.
The embassy said German organizations are working closely with local partners and coordinating with the Government of Nepal to ensure that assistance reaches the communities most in need.
“Germany stands with the people of Nepal in this difficult time,” the embassy said, expressing solidarity with the victims of the disaster and their families and reaffirming the longstanding partnership between Germany and Nepal.
