One dead, four hurt in Jhapa jeep accident

Bhadrapur – A person was killed and others four were severely injured in a jeep accident took place early this morning at Jhiljhile of Jhapa along the East-West Highway. The District Traffic Police Office, Jhapa confirmed the death of Sandip Karki, 29, of Udaypur in the accident occurred at 3:00 am. According to the office, a Scorpio jeep (Me 1 Ja 4533) en route to east from west overturned on the road as driver lost control over the vehicle all of a sudden, leaving five passengers including Kakri critically hurt. All of them were rushed to the Birtamod-based B&C Hospital where he died amidst treatment. House passes proposal to send two bills for clause-wise deliberation

Kathmandu – The meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) today endorsed a proposal tabled seeking to send two bills to respective committees for clause-wise deliberations. Minister for Urban Development Mohammed Istiyak Rai presented the proposal on behalf of the Minister for Health and Population, seeking the meeting approval to send the ‘Public Health Bill, 2075’ and ‘Bill on Housing Rights, 2075’ to the respective committees for holding clause-wise deliberations. US philanthropist providing scholarship to Rolpa students for a decade

Rolpa –  An American national who had been Rolpa for the first time in life in course of her PhD research 35 years ago has been offering scholarship to many students in the district for a decade. She is Dr Augusta Monlar. The scholarship amount is distributed through the Tanka Prasad Acharya Memorial Foundation to over 100 students from low-income families and on the basis of merit. Over 100 students are being benefitted from the scholarship every year, the Development Concerned Society Rolpa said. A total sum of Rs 550,000 is allocated for scholarship package every year, society chair Karna Bantha said. Students of three levels– primary, secondary and higher secondary–get selected for the scholarship. It has been a great help for the students from poor community finding hard to continue with education despite potential and interest. Bir Balbhadra Secondary School of Thawang also receives assistance from the American philanthropist. Dr Bhattarai voices for amending Civil Code

Kathmandu –  Member in the House of Representatives (HoR), Dr Baburam Bhattarai, has drawn the government’s attention towards making correction in the weaknesses in the Penal and Civil Codes that came into effect from August 17. Taking a time in the special hour of the lower house today, he stressed the need of addressing dissenting voices relating to the Code. In his comment on the bill to amend the Citizenship Act, he said seeking the identity of a father in the citizenship was itself a discriminatory. He was of the view of recognizing an independent presence of women. Amend provision curtailing press freedom: NC President Deuba

Kathmandu – Leader of the major opposition Sher Bahadur Deuba has demanded the amendment in the provisions of the Criminal and Civil Codes which curtail press freedom.
