Kathmandu – Nepal Students Union (NSU) has demonstrated at different parts of Kathmandu Valley today, demanding withdrawal of price hike in petroleum products and public transport fare during festival. Vice President Pun returns home

Kathmandu – Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun has returned home today after wrapping up six-day official visit to China. Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara, National Assembly Chairperson Ganesh Prasad Timilsina and Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa welcomed Vice-President Pun at the VVIP lounge of the Tribhuvan International Airport. Nepal to play against Tajikistan in first match of Bangabandhu Gold Cup

Kathmandu – Nepal is taking on Tajikistan in its first match held under the fifth edition of the Bangabandhu Gold Cup International Football Tournament scheduled for October 1-12 in Bangladesh. Categorised into Group ‘A’ alongside Palestine and Tajikistan, Nepal is also scheduled to play against Palestine on October 5. The Nepali team will leave for Bangladesh on October 1 to play the tournament. Hosts Bangladesh, Philippines and Laos are categorised into Group ‘B’. Nepal cleared the way into the competition after the Bangladesh Football Federation on Sunday released USD 25,000 entitled to Nepal for winning the previous fourth edition of the tournament. FCAN gets new leadership

Kathmandu – Rabi Singh has been elected the chair of Federation of Contractors’ Associations of Nepal. In the election, he secured 466 votes against 353 by his nearest rival Yakshyadhwaj Karki, confirmed chief election officer Baburam Dahal. Other candidates for the post– Ram Sharan Deuja and Purushottam Manandhar –got 66 and seven votes respectively. Similarly, Nicholas Pandey, the candidate for the senior vice chair, has obtained 465 votes to win the election. He beat his closest competitor Laxman Kumar Rana by 37 votes. Likewise, Dhirendra Kumar Dahal (vice chair- province 1), Surendra Prasad Singh (vice chair-province 2), Pemba Lama Sherpa (vice chair-province 3), Rajendra Pahari (vice chair-Gandaki province), Top Bahadur Raymajhi ( vice chair- province 5), Ratna Bahadur Khadka (vice chair- Karnali province) and Tek Bahadur Shetty vice chair-province 7) have been elected unopposed. PAF activities slow off the mark, says NPC report

Kathmandu – The social mobilization programme launched by the Poverty Alleviation Fund (PAF) has been found questionable, and its strategy unclear. The monitoring report prepared by the National Planning Commission on the structural management and operation and the effectiveness of the PAF activities painted bleak picture. The PAF set up to help reduce poverty by mainstreaming the poor and excluded communities in the mainstream development is led by the Prime Minister. It has been conducting programmes on livelihood and small infrastructures by forming 32,000 community organizations with the expansion of its programmes in 66 districts across the country. The NPC report on PAF has mentioned that monitoring and evaluation was ineffective and the programmes failed to reach the target groups. Although nearly one million households were benefitted with various programmes as employment generation and capacity building, lack of professional capacity among PAF employees, disparity in experience, increase in corruption cases, lack of mutual trust among the units it promoted, and incompetent secretariats were severe problems suffering the PAF.
