Finance Minister rues media not sufficiently publicizing government’s good works

Finance Minister Dr Yuba Raj Khatiwada has said that the mass communication media was not sufficiently publicizing the government’s good works. Laying the foundation stone of a building of the Tribhuvan University’s Central Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (CDJMC) at Balkhu today, he said the media played an important role in making the citizens aware and well-informed, therefore, it was necessary to publicise the good works done by the government. The Finance Minister stressed on the need of practicing journalism based on moral and social virtues and of incorporating the moral norms and values in the curriculum. “The use of technology should be enhanced in journalism education. Construction of a building with digital technology is its indication. The use of new and digital media has made the mass media more credible,” he said. Stating there is wider concern that the growing use of digital media might lead to a decline in the popularity of print media, he argued that the credibility of the print media would not be lessened as it has its distinct significance. Nepal secures 87th position in international women volleyball ranking

Nepal has achieved 87th position in the world ranking of women volleyball unveiled by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). The FIVB is the supreme body of the world volleyball. As per the ranking chart issued today, National Women Volleyball Team has been placed in the 87th position with 57 points. The ranking is based on the international participation and results. The Nepali Women Volleyball Team had won the title of AVC Asian Central Zone Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship held in Bangladesh in November, 2019. The achievement was historic. Nepal had won the historic silver medal in women’s volleyball held under the recent 13th South Asian Games. Southern neighbor India is in the 54th position with 97 points while the northern neighbour China is in the topmost position with the 391 points followed by the USA (second) with 382 points and Brazil (third) with 328 points. Works done in tandem with all stakeholders for success of VNY 2020: Minister Bhattarai

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, Yogesh Kumar Bhattarai has said the government has been working maintaining coordination with all the stakeholders to avoid any shortcomings for making the Visit Nepal Year campaign successful. Speaking in the House of Representatives, International Relations Committee’s meeting today, he said home work was done to spread encouraging message in the international level for promoting Nepal’s tourism. “The unexpected coronavirus outbreak has had some impact. We have shortage of resources and human resources for the Visit Year. Nevertheless, the sanitation works, construction of physical infrastructures and works at the Immigration Office of the Tribhuvan International Airport were going on vigorously,” he said. In the context of promotion of tourism in the country, he said, 2020 AD has been taken as a year for learning and acquiring experience while the decade from 2020 to 2030 is being observed as the Tourism Decade, being based on the work plan prepared by experts. Parliamentary committee directs govt to complete Karnali corridor soon

The Development and Technology Committee under the House of Representatives has directed the government to complete the under-construction Karnali corridor soon. The parliamentary committee’s meeting on Wednesday made this direction after taking stock of project progress from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, Defence Ministry and the Nepal Army. The Committee members stressed the need for early completion of the project linking Simkot, the district headquarters of Humla to road network. The Committee’s chairperson Kalyani Kumari Khadka accused the Department of Roads for lacking a substantial study before starting the project. On the occasion, pointing out army’s help and cooperation with the Department of Roads in constructing roads, Lieutenant General Gaurab Tandul complained that difficulties involved in supplying construction materials (through Chinese routes) for the project as there is not road network linking to the construction site inside Nepal territory. “There is a difficulty to acquire permit to supply construction materials through Chinese routes,” he said. Lalita Niwas Land Scam: Charge sheet filed against 175

The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has filed a case of corruption against 175 persons including then Deputy Prime Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachchadar on the charge of illegally seizing public land. The case was filed at the Special Court today. Those named in the charge sheet include three former ministers and six senior government officials. They have been accused of indulging in irregularities in transferring the ownership of the public land inside the Lalita Niwas premises in Baluwatar of Kathmandu, according to CIAA spokesperson Pradip Kumar Koirala.
