Elected Local Government representatives from Nepal on Exposure visit to India

kathamandu. As part of Government of India’s post-earthquake-reconstruction efforts in Nepal, United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) is organizing an exposure visit of 21 Elected Local Government representatives from Nuwakot District of Nepal to India from 10-14 February 2020. Mayors/Deputy Mayors of two Municipalities and Chairs/Vice- Chairs of eight Gaunpalikas with the Chairperson of District Coordination Committee, Nuwakot and an official from Federation of Nepalese Journalists are participating in the visit. 2. During their visit to India, the delegation will visit CSIR- Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee, to observe the Shake Table Testing Facility and different labs such as Structural Engineering lab, Fire lab, Technology Demonstration lab and Rural Park. The delegation will visit CURE India to learn participatory process for sustainable urban development and livelihood integration. At Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), the delegation will hear presentation on Post-Earthquake conservation and restoration works by INTACH together with a guided tour at the INTACH Heritage Academy. 3. Government of India is collaborating with Government of Nepal on post- earthquake reconstruction of 23,088 houses in Nuwakot district of Nepal. To complement the Government of Nepal’s owner driven reconstruction approach, UNOPS is providing socio-technical facilitation to home owners to rebuild their resilient homes. 4. India Builds Chandrakot Campus in Gulmi District

  kathamandu . Chandrakot Campus, built with the Government of India’s assistance, was inaugurated at Chandrakot Rural Municipality in Gulmi District. Dr. Praphullachandra Sharma, Counsellor (Development Partnership) represented the Embassy of India. Chief of Chandrakot Rural Municipality Mr. Drona Bahadur Khatri, District Coordination Officer, Mr. Bhaktiram Marasini and local political and community leaders also attended the inauguration. Chandrakot Campus was established in 2008 at the initiative of local peoples with aimed at imparting higher education to students who are unable to pursue their higher education in cities like Palpa, Butwal, and Kathmandu etc. due to poor economic conditions. The Campus is a community based Campus affiliated to Tribhuvan University and is providing Bachelor in Humanities, Management and Social Science. Over 90% of the students studying in the Campus are girls. The establishment of this campus has fulfilled the aspirations of the economically poor and socially backward students, in particular girls’ students, who were deprived of higher education in the absence of a college in the region. The new campus building constructed with Government of India’s grant assistance of NRs. 40.99 million, is a triple storied building comprising of twelve class rooms, office building and separate sanitation facilities for boys and girls on each floor. Tourism Minister Bhattarai and Israel’s Economy Minister talk investment, trade and tourism

Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Yogesh Bhattarai and the Minister of Economy of the State of Israel, Mr Eli Cohen, met with each other, in the Ministry this morning. The meeting was focused on the matters of cooperation in the field of investment, trade and tourism, the Embassy of Nepal in Tel Aviv, Israel stated in a press release. Minister Bhattarai highlighted the potential areas of investment in Nepal such as hydropower, hotels, casinos, agriculture, among others. Also, the meeting searched avenues of searching markets for Nepali tea, coffee, cardamom, and other spices in Israel. The Minister discussed to open other areas like restaurants and other business besides the caregiver sector. The Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister expressed happiness to hear about the upcoming State Visit of the President of the State of Israel to Nepal which is going to be followed by the State Visit of the Prime Minister of Nepal to the State of Israel. The two Ministers expressed their commitments for the exchange of visits of business delegation as well. Ministry issues white paper; Melamchi drinking water by coming mid july

The Ministry of Water Supply and Sanitation has vowed to complete the much-hyped Melamchi drinking water project by coming mid July. Minister for Drinking Water Bina Magar issued the white paper, vowing that the Melamchi project would be completed by mid July. “Drinking water is basic need of people, so the government is committed to ensure Melamchi water to the Kathmandu Valley people soon. The construction of the remaining tasks under the project is expedited,” she argued, reminding that government had said the latest contract for the project was made with Sino Hydro last Asoj. As per the contract, the company is to construct tunnel and head box. Ministry secretary Madhab Belbase said, “The Chinese company has intensified the construction. The fresh deadline won’t make us despair anymore.” He further said as various issues surface on Melamchi, the white paper was issued. As per the fresh contract, the company had agreed to complete the task in fifteen months, but with the acceleration of construction, it will complete by mid July- before the deadline, according to Belbase. He however said in case the tunnel construction does not complete by mid July, the Kathmanduties would be provided water with the construction of temporary channel.
