Nepal Communist Party chair and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ on Thursday inaugurated the newly-constructed ‘Umbrella Street’ at Bharatpur metropolis-22, Patihani. On the occasion, he expressed his confidence that the street would further help in the development and expansion of tourism in Patihani. The street stretched over around 10 kattha land was constructed at the cost of Rs 30 million, shared ward chair Bishnu Raj Mahato. As many as 480 colorful umbrellas have been set up in the street. Call to bring regulation on reproductive health right

Various stakeholders have drawn concern over the withered implementation of Safe Motherhood and Reproductive Health Right Act-2075 due to delay in introducing its regulation. At a programme organized by Forum for Women, Law and Development on Thursday, it was shared that the constitutionally-enshrined obligation of formulating law within three years of its proclamation has not been implemented in absence of regulation. The Act was endorsed by both the parliaments (House of Representatives and National Assembly) on 18 September 2018. On the occasion, Minster of State for Health and Population Nawaraj Raut pledged to take initiative to clear decks in the formulation of regulation. He claimed that the government has framed several laws required for the implementation of the constitution. Director for Department of Health Service, Family Welfare Section Dr Bhim Singh Tingkari shared that the regulation was being drafted. FWLD;s executive director Sabin Shrestha said citizens are deprived of fundamental right to accessing health service for not promulgating the regulation. ‘Institutional and policy reforms inevitable in TVET sector’

Policy-makers, experts and practitioners of technical vocational education and training (TVET) have highlighted the need of its reforms in terms of institutions, policy and programme so as to broaden its discernible contributions to the country’s development. The experts also called for collaboration and co-creation with private sector in the operation and management of TVET sector considering their wider contributions to the creation of employment opportunities as well as putting measures to bridge gap in production of skilled work force and job market needs. At a national seminar ‘Technical and vocational education and training: reform initiatives and future strategies’ jointly organized by Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and Kathmandu University School of Education (KUSOED) in the capital on Friday, Minster for Education Giriraj Mani Pokharel insisted that the country should adopt the paradigm for linking education to skills, skills to production and production to prosperity. Underlining the need of multi-sector discussion on wider reforms in education, he called for concerned actors and stakeholders to engage in framing and finalizing three separate bills to manage higher education, technical and vocational education and national education. First privately-run hydroelectric plant starts operation

With the maiden operation of Upper Khorunga Rivulet Small Hydroelectric Project on Thursday, the first privately-run hydroelectric project has been materialized in Terhathum, the eastern hilly district of Nepal. The 7.5 megawatt project of around Rs. 1.37 billion has started its operation from its powerhouse at Menchchyayem Rural Municipality-6, Kholakhet of Tehrathum. The power generated from this project has been linked with national grid through a sub-station of Nepal Electricity Authority located at Jirikhimti Bazar of Tehrathum. The much-anticipated project, run by Terhathum Power Company, has made Tehrathum self-reliant on electricity, said Laxman Tiwari, one of the investors of this only functional hydropower plant in the district. ”Based on current electricity demand in the district, Terhathum needs around three megawatt ”, said Tiwari, ”Our 7.5 megawatts of electricity will be surplus to export to other districts through national grid.” Tiwari said the district wouldn’t face any load-shedding in the future. Terhathum Power Company had inked Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Nepal Electricity Authority in 2017. It had started the project construction since 30 January 2018 and completed within two year as specified in the PPA. According to the company, it will generate Rs. 250 million per year by selling its power. Nepal-Australia diplomatic relation is entering into 60 years of its establishment from (February 15) Saturday. Canberra has established itself as a reliable development partner of Kathmandu in 59 years of the diplomatic ties between Nepal and Australia. Over the years, the Australian government and private sector have contributed to the economic and social development of Nepal through assistance in the fields of health, education, hydroelectricity, sustainable management of forest, agriculture, strengthening governance and service delivery, civil aviation, and livestock management. Australia’s assistance to Nepal is delivered through Nepal government and in partnership with other donors and multilateral organizations. Priority areas for Australia’s development assistance to Nepal are in line with Nepal’s poverty reduction strategy and include basic education, health, livelihoods, strengthening and improving governance, peace building and human resource development. Australia has also equally contributed to human resource development through the provision of scholarships, and helped to reduce the incidence of HIV through a Harm Reduction program for Injecting Drug Users (IDUs). Support has also been provided to peace building activities that address the root causes of conflict, such as issues of governance, poverty and discrimination. Currently, Australia is assisting in enriching local governance, education and micro-enterprise development.
