European countries’ ambassadors and UN delegates call on Speaker Sapkota

Ambassadors of European countries have intensified their meetings with Speaker of the House of Representatives (HoR), Agni Prasad Sapkota. Norwegian Ambassador to Nepal Lasse Bjørn Johannessen paid a courtesy call on Sapkota on Monday and extended congratulations and best wishes to the latter for successful tenure, shared Speaker’s press adviser Shreedhar Neupane. During the meet, the Ambassador pledged to continue its support to Nepal’s economic and social sectors. On the same day, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)’s residential representative Ayshanie Medagangoda Labe also called on Sapkota and congratulated him on assuming the responsibility of the Speaker. The UN representative shared that the UN has been carrying out diverse works in 26 different areas and expressed commitment to continue its support in coming days. Non Resident Ambassador of Czech Republic Milan Hovorka also called on Spadker Sapkota and wished for his successful term. Shakti Gauchan and Junga Bahadur felicitated

Former captain of Nepali National Cricket team Shakti Gauchan, who took retirement from International cricket tournament, was felicitated in Bhairahawa. Shakti had taken retirement from international cricket tournament on June-July 2018 and also from national cricket tournament on November-December same year. He took retirement from national tournament immediately after completion of Everest Premier League in Pokhara. Right-handed batsman and leg-spinner Shakti had played cricket for the country for continuous 18 years. Gauchan, who played ninth international T20 match, has run cricket academy at Padsari in Rupandehi after taking retirement from the cricket. Gauchan was honoured amidst a programme organized at Siddhartha Stadium on Monday. State Assembly member Santosh Pandey felicitated Shakti with cash prize and letter of appreciation. Likewise, international cricket coach Junga Bahadur Thapa was also honoured on the same occasion. Trump, Erdogan discuss Syria, Libya on phone

U.S. President Donald Trump spoke over phone with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday to discuss issues concerning Syria and Libya, said the White House on Sunday. During their talks, Trump expressed concern over the violence in Idlib, the last rebel-held stronghold in Syria, and called for a political solution to the Syrian conflict, a White House statement said. Trump and Erdogan exchanged views on ending the crisis in Idlib as soon as possible. Earlier on Friday, the Turkish Defense Ministry said 63 Syrian government troops had been killed in Idlib in a Turkish offensive, according to information from various sources. The Russian military on the same day refuted Ankara’s claim and warned in a statement that Turkey’s accusation “only aggravates the situation and may lead to hasty decisions that do not meet mutual interests of Russia and Turkey.” Tensions in Idlib have flared up recently as the Syrian government forces, which are launching wide-scale offensives against the rebels in the area, exchanged fire with Turkish troops, causing multiple deaths on both sides. China may postpone annual parliament session as it battles coronavirus

China may postpone its annual parliament session, state media said Monday, as the country battles to control the outbreak of the new coronavirus. China’s ruling council will “deliberate a draft decision” over postponing the ten-day National People’s Congress (NPC), said official news agency Xinhua, ahead of the meeting due to start on March 5. The top parliamentary meeting has been held annually in March for the past 35 years. More than 70,000 people have been infected by the epidemic in mainland China, which started in central Hubei province and has spread across China and to other countries. It has claimed 1,770 lives and prompted the closure of many schools, entertainment venues and large-scale events across China. A meeting of China’s elite Politburo Standing Committee next week is expected to “deliberate a draft decision on postponing the third annual session of the 13th NPC”, according to Xinhua. It will also review a decision on banning the “illegal wildlife trade and eliminating the bad habits of eating wild animals to guarantee people’s lives, health and safety”, Xinhua said.
