Overcrowding in jail increases security threat

Nepalgunj – Overcrowding has increased security threat in Nepalgunj-based Banke district jail. With the rise in the number of inmates, the volume of wastes emanating from the prison has also increased and its management has become tougher. As a result, the prison premises is stinking with rampant throwing of wastes and more prisoners are getting health complications. Jailor Shyam Lal Lamichhane said that the jail has the real capacity for 300 inmates but now it is accommodating 658, which is more than double in number. Jail security challenges have increased as the walls on the premises are decrepit, inmates are accommodated beyond its real capacity and the prison is located amidst a dense settlement, the prison administration said. A contingent of 50 security personnel from Nepal Police and Armed Police Force has been deployed for the prison security which is inadequate in itself for maintaining security. “Compulsion to accommodate more than enough inmates, lack of modern security arrangement and prison being located in the proximity of dense settlement have triggered security threats in the jail,” said jailer Lamichhane. NSCIDC will have own exhibition hall soon

Kathmandu, Aug 10 (RSS): The Nepal Small and Cottage Industry Development Committee (NSCIDA) will construct a SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) level exhibition hall. The construction drive aims to promote products from the country’s small and cottage industries at international level, said a committee official. The hall project site is located in Battisputali in Kathmandu covering 11 ropanis of land, and the estimated cost is Rs 350 million. The six-storeyed building will have three halls, one big and other two medium. The Committee has been organising small and cottage industry festival in the Bhrikutimandap Exhibition Hall for want of its own building. “Construction of the building will help in the development of small and cottage industry of the country,” said the Committee’s Spokesperson Bishwo Raman Acharya. Looters shot at man

Mahendranagar, Dhanusa, Aug 10 (RSS): A man was injured seriously when a group of looters shot at him at Jamunibas of Mithila Municipality-8 in Dhanusa district on Thursday night. The robbers shot at Pushpa Lal Shrestha when he tried to protect his family members and himself from them, who broke into Shrestha’s house and went on a looting spree. However, the robbers decamped with gold jewellery weighing seven tolas, silver jewellery weighing 15 tolas and more than Rs 100,000 in cash before the police reached the incident site. Rupani villagers complain of polluted water supply

Rajbiraj, Saptari –  Local people of Rupani Rural Municipality-6 in Saptari have complained that they are forced to drink polutaed water supplied by the District Drinking Water and Sanitation Division Office. “Water pipes have broken at many places and water is supplied without purification,” said a local resident Brija Man Tamang. The local people have also blamed the office employees and the water consumer committee for pocketing budget released for the water pipe repair. It cost Rs 60 million to launch the project.
