Three female Everest summiteers feted

Kathmandu – The Pasang Lhamu Mountaineering Foundation has felicitated three female Mount Everest climbers amidst a programme here today. The foundation has been established in the commemoration of the late Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, who made her history as the first Nepali woman to scale the world’s highest peak in 1993. She died while descending from the mountain summit. The late Sherpa has been given the status of a national luminary. Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Gokul Prasad Baskota, honoured Lakpa Yangdi Sherpa, Pasang Lhamu Sherpa (second) and Yangdi Sherpa of Khumbu Pasang Lhamu rural municipality in Solukhumbu who on May 16 this year reached atop the world’s highest mountain, carrying photos the late Sherpa and the late veteran communist leader Madan Bhandari. On the occasion, the Minister congratulated the three female climbers on their success, pledging future support to the team. Offering his words of respect to the late Sherpa, the minister remembered her as an inspiring figure for all who took a great courage to prove her strength in the adventurous tourism. On the occasion, he also eulogised leader Bhandari as the epitome of democratic, patriotic and social justice movement of Nepal. 40 hurt in Nuwakot bus accident

Nuwakot – At least 40 people have been injured in an accident involving a passenger bus today. The bus en route to Kathmandu from Bungtang met with an accident at around 10:30 am at Lamatar of Bidur Municipality-9. As stated by the police, the bus (Ba 2 Kha 2804) fell some 40 meters down the road as the road caved in from its edge when the bus was trying to clear space for another vehicle. According to Nuwakot’s senior superintendent of police, Basanta Bahadur Kunwar, among the injured, seven in critical condition, have been sent to Kathmandu for further treatment while others are undergoing treatment at the Trishuli Hospital. ...

Province minister sees need of proper utilisation of state-owned media

Dhangadhi –  Minister for Economic Affairs and Planning of Province 7, Jhapat Bahadur Bohara, has said the province government wanted to make the most out of the existing state-owned media houses by further increasing their efficiency instead of opening new ones. The province government minister said this during his meeting with chairman of Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS), Harihar Adhikari ‘Shyamal’ here last evening. He urged the RSS leadership to come up with a proposal expressing what sorts of support and help the organisation expected from the province government to make presence effective in the changed context. On the occasion, chair Shyamal said, “The RSS news services could be the means of linking federal, province and local governments with each other and the people as well.” The RSS hoped to get policy-level and financial support from the province government. MPs draw government’s attention on contemporary issues

Kathmandu – Lawmakers speaking in the zero hour of the meeting of the House of Representatives today drew the attention of the government on a host of contemporary issues. Bimala Nepali of the Nepali Congress expressed dismay saying the people of the dalit community across the country were suffering harassment day after day. She drew the attention of the bodies concerned to stop such inhuman activities against the dalits. Bharat Kumar Shah of the same party criticised the imposition of tax by the local level in an arbitrary manner and warned lest the tax would make federalism a failure. Bhupendra Bahadur Thapa of the Communist Party of Nepal drew attention of the government to open the Beni-Jomsom road which has been obstructed due to rains. Maheshwar Jung Gahatraj of the same party demanded with the government to provide living allowances to the people injured in the Madhes movement and the People’s Movement. Meena Subba of the Nepali Congress said that the government ministers had initially shown some enthusiasm to carry out works which the people could feel about. She said the initial enthusiasm has now dampened. Swollen Kaligandaki sweeps away school, 24 households at risk

Myagdi – The flood-fed Kaligandaki River has blown away a school in Myagdi district this morning. The river changed the course and swept away the six-room Dhawalagiri Primary School at Kopchepani in Annapurna rural municipality-4, informed school management committee chairperson Durga Khadka. As many as 20 students are pursuing their education in the school. The area has witnessed torrential rains for the last couple of days. The Kaligandaki flood has gushed into the human settlement and is causing land erosion. Ward Chairperson Chandra Prakash Fagami said that the flood has put at risk the 24 households of the human settlement at Kopchepani along the trekking route leading to Mustang. “I had informed the rural municipality and district disaster management committee about the loss”, he said.
