Beni-Jomsom road closed

Myagdi – The Beni-Jomsom road that links Myagdi with mountainous district Mustang has remained blocked since this morning following landslides occurred at multiple locations along the highway. The landslide hit the Beni-Ghasa section (towards Mustang) on the 76 kilometer-road, leaving tourists, pilgrims and locals stranded. Mustang is home to various touristic sites including Jomsom while the famous Muktinath temple also lies here. Road sections towards Myagdi– Titar, Kavrebhir, Guinthe, Rupse, Baisari and Begkhola– have been hit by landslides, according to Beni Jomson Korala Road Project Supervisor Indra Singh Sherchan. Efforts are underway to clear the rubble with the help of dozers with a target of resuming it by this evening. The road got damaged by the mudslides when it was on the process of being upgraded. Three IEDs found, two arrested with bomb

Kathmandu – Three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) have been found at different places of Kathmandu today. The IEDs were found at Naikap Balkhu bridge of Chandragiri Municipality, Nayapati of Gokarneshwor Municipality and Jamal of Kathmandu Metropolitan City. Nepal Communist Party led by Netra Bikram Chand ‘Biplav’ has called nation-wide general strike today. Chief of Metropolitan Police Range, Kathmandu, Bishworaj Pokharel, said that Nepal Army has defused the bombs planted at Naikap and Nayapati, adding police have arrested two persons—Usha Kiran and Tara Sanjel along with bomb from Jamal. Ward supports Dalit community for Panchebaaja preservation

Waling – Ward no. 9 of Bhirkot municipalityin Syangja district has handed Panchebaaja – a set of five traditional Nepali musical instruments played during special ceremony – to a local Dalit community as assistance. With a view to preserving the special band which is on the verge of disappearance, a set of Panchebaaja worth Rs 150,000 was granted to the Dalit community, said Ward 9 Chairperson Bhim Bahadur Gurung. “We provided a set of five musical instruments listening to the demand of Dalit community”, he added. The ward provided this support to the dalit community, which has adopted ‘band playing’ as a profession, in a bid to protect the culture and source of their livelihood. Road accidents on the rise

Rajbiraj – The Saptari district has seen recurring road accidents. As many as 320 road crashes occurred in different parts of the district during the fiscal 2074/75. Some 79 had reportedly lost their lives to road mishaps whereas 189 sustained severe injuries and 344 minor injuries during the period. In the last fiscal, 37 trucks, 53 buses, 50 cars and jeeps, 23 tractors, five tempos and 244 motorbikes had met with accidents, according to District Traffic Police Office Chief Inspector Sunil Kumar Shrestha. Among the major causes behind the recurring road accidents include excessive flow of vehicles, congested East-West Highway, lack of alternative road, high speed of vehicles, alcoholic driving, Shrestha added. It may be noted that 53,624 drivers had faced music for violating traffic rules in the last fiscal year alone. Revenue amounting to Rs 31.45 million was raised from the action for violation of traffic rules. Some 51 had died in road accidents in the fiscal 2072/73 BS while the death toll from road mishaps was 22 in the year 2071/72...

Inmates in trouble

Terhathum – Jailbirds are reeling under troubled life as the district prison is overcrowded with three-fold than its original capacity. The district jail has the capacity to accommodate 25 inmates but is now managing 88. As a result, the inmates are facing inadequacy of drinking water and spaces for toilet besides trouble in preparing meal. Prison In-Charge Umesh Ghimire shared that 83 men and five women have been languished in the jail. :Overcrowding of prisoners has challenged them to manage the jail”, he added. Though the concerned authorities were frequently informed of the status, no measure has been taken so far to resolve the problems facing the prison, he said.
