India releases 7 Pakistani prisoners

NEW DELHI – Day after Pakistani authorities released 30 Indian prisoners, New Delhi have also released seven Pakistani civilian prisoners, officials said Tuesday. “We repatriated seven Pakistan civilian prisoners yesterday,” an Indian Home Ministry official said. “Last week also 14 Pakistani fishermen were released and repatriated.”Pakistan handed over 30 Indian prisoners including 27 fishermen to Indian officials on Monday at Wagah border in Punjab. Islamabad described the move as humanitarian gesture and had expected a similar response from New Delhi. According to Indian officials, as per a government report submitted to the country’s top court last month, over 470 Indians, including 418 fishermen, were languishing in Pakistani jails. Fishermen of the two countries are often jailed for accidentally crossing into each other’s territory. The fishermen from both sides traverse poorly-defined boundary in the international waters as most fishing boats lack technologies to locate exact positions. Meanwhile a statement issued by the Indian Home Ministry said they have secured release of 178 prisoners this year. “India attaches high priority to addressing humanitarian issues including early release and repatriation of Indian fishermen and prisoners in Pakistan’s custody. Government is serious to guarantee social security, says Labour Minister

Kathmandu – Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security Gokarna Bista has said that the government was serious toward guaranteeing social security to the grass toots level people by bringing the labourers working in the informal sector into the social security coverage. The Labour Minister said this while addressing the National Discussion on Social Security in Nepal organised by the International Trade Union Confederation – Asia Pacific here today. He said it was necessary to pursue the social security programme so as to cover as many as laborers. ‘It is a very difficult job indeed to bring the the large number of workers who are in the non-formal economy into the ambit of social security. The social security act has made some provisions in this regard. It is necessary to formulate plans in additional sectors other than those provided in the act while taking into account the international practice,’ he said. The Minister expressed the belief that this type of programme can be implemented in an effective way through the coordinated efforts among the employers, labourers and the three tiers of governments. Chitwan police arrest 12 for ‘suspicious’ activities

Ratnanagar –  The Chitwan police have arrested 12 people from different parts of the district on charge of their involvement in suspicious activities. According to Superintendent of Police, Sushil Singh Rathaur, a police squad which was mobilized since the last night for security purposes took such a number of people from different areas under control. Some of them had stones and lighters in their pockets, while some others were forcing people to shut down market, and some were held for doubtful conduct. They all are under investigation and police are trying to find out whether they have connections with the Communist Party of Nepal led by Netra Bikram Chand (Biplav) involved in violent activities. Normal life here remained affected today due to a banda announced by the party. Public vehicles operating on short and long routes remained off the roads because of the banda. Schools, academic institutions, main market areas, and factories and industries were closed. According to SP Rathaur, there is a report about the detection of a suspicious object at Bharatpur-based Rijal Chowk and a bomb disposal team has already been sent to the site. Security in the district has been beefed up and no untoward incident has been reported so far. Two parked trucks torched

Nawalparasi, Aug 14: Two trucks were set ablaze at Gaindakot of eastern Nawalparasi today. The two trucks—Na 2 Kha 8487 and Na 2 Kha 2548 parked at Bhrikuti Chowk were torched, according to the District Police Office (east of Bardaghat Susta). The reason behind the incident is yet to be ascertained. The trucks suffered minor damages in the incident.
