Kathmandu: Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun has said that Nepal should create a medal target situation in the Olympics.

Speaking at the main event of Olympic Day 2021 organized by the Nepal Olympic Committee, he stressed on the need for the Nepali sports sector to plan accordingly.

He also pointed out, the need for a review of the performance of Nepali athletes in the Olympics so far. Pointing to the reason for organizing the event on Wednesday, he addressed, ‘This is a great day for the world sports sector. The history of the Olympics is the height of human civilization as a whole.’

During the program, Vice President Pun and Chairman of the Committee Jiwan Ram Shrestha jointly hoisted the flag of the International Olympic Committee. A group of Olympic athletes led by Olympian Mukunda Shrestha also handed over the Olympic torch to Pun, who participated in the program as the chief guest.

The program is organized by the Nepal Olympic Committee and coordinated by Sports for All Commission. Commission Chairman Bishnu Gopal Shrestha highlighted the importance of Olympic Deco on the occasion. Similarly, Secretary at the Ministry of Youth and Sports Kedar Neupane congratulated all the athletes on the occasion of Olympic Day and said that high performance is expected for the country. Speaking on the occasion, Committee Chairman Jeevan Ram Shrestha said that sports would have a positive impact on the society and it would contribute for peace, prosperity, harmony and development. Speaking ahead of the event, he said, “In the face of the Corona epidemic, the slogan of sports is to keep everyone safe, healthy and alert.’

On the same occasion, an appreciation certificate  also provided to the association that won a gold medal in the 13th South Asian Games (SAGS) and to the association that made an outstanding contribution to Olympic Day 2021. Nepal had won gold in 13 games at the South Asian Games in Kathmandu.

In the program conducted by the Vice Chairman and Executive Director of the Committee Chaturananda Raj Baidya, the General Secretary of the Committee Nilendra Raj Shrestha stressed on the need for long term planning and investment for the development of Nepali sports.

Agreement with the Daraj committee

The Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) on Wednesday signed an agreement with Daraj, a company under the Alibaba Group, to promote Olympic activities in Nepal during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

It has been signed by Chairman Jiwan Ram Shrestha and Executive Director of Daraj Lino Ahlering on behalf of the committee. Under the agreement, Daraj will now assist the committee with various programs for the promotion of Olympic spirit, programs and athletes.
