Leader Agni Prasad Sapkota from the ruling Nepal Communist Party has registered his candidacy to the post of Speaker.

Sapkota registered his candidacy this afternoon at Lhotse Hall of Federal parliament Building, New Baneshwor. Deputy-leader of the NCP Parliamentary Party, Subas Nembang, proposed the candidacy of Sapkota while NCP’s Chief Whip, Dev Gurung and lawmaker Onsari Gharti as well as lawmaker of Rastriya Janata Party, Laxman Lal Karna, seconded it.

The Parliament Secretariat has set 11: 00 am to 2:00 pm as the deadline to register candidacy for the post of Speaker. The election is taking place on January 26. A Secretariat meeting of the NCP held on Sunday had decided to field NCP’s standing committee member Sapkota as the candidate of the Speaker post.

The post of Speaker has remained vacant for the past four months after then Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara resigned from the post over allegations of sexual misconduct against a staffer at the Parliament Secretariat.
