Efforts are ongoing to strike a consensus with main opposition parties on the formation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Government’s efforts were underway to establish long-lasting peace by providing justice in serious cases of the Maoist decade-long insurgency, said Minister for Communications and Information Technology Gokul Prasad Banskota at a regular press meet organised in Singha Durbar to provide information of Cabinet decisions on January 5.

“We have a responsibility to take the country to permanent peace and hand over its ownership to the next generation. The commission has incorporated issues of whether perpetrators of serious crimes are given pardon or not,” he said.

The operational mandate of the TRC and the Commission of Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons expired 10 months ago. On whether the Information Technology Bill that is under consideration in the Parliament would affect people’s rights to freedom, Minister Banskota, also government’s spokesperson, said the Bill was brought for economic security, digital payment, signature and privacy security. “But we are clear enough that the Bill will not affect democracy,” he said.
