BIMSTEC Senior Officials’ Meeting begins

Kathmandu – The 19th Session of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM) has begun in the central capital. The meeting is attended by secretaries at the ministries of foreign/external affairs will focus on the discussions about trade and investment; transport and communications; technology; counter-terrorism and transnational crime; agriculture, poverty alleviation and public health, as stated by secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Shanker Das Bairagi told RSS. Nepal serves as the current chair of the sub regional body of seven countries surrounding the Bay of Bengal which was formed in June 1997 and is hosting the fourth Summit on August 30 and 31. The Nepali delegation to the SOM held on the eve of the Summit is headed by foreign secretary Bairagi. According to the secretary, the meeting will hold detailed discussions on the draft of the Kathmandu Declaration to be issued by the Summit at the end. Besides, the meeting will go through serious discussions about reports presented by other BIMSTEC mechanisms. The meeting is learnt to have been making a review of progresses so far on the 14 areas of priorities determined by the BIMSTEC. Disaster hit Nalgad Municipality in Jajarkot in darkness

Jajarkot – More than four thousand people in Nalgad Municipality in Jajarkot district are compelled to live in darkness after the flood and landslide swept away the canal supplying water to the reservoir of the local hydroelectricity project. The flood in Jhurme Khola flowing through the ward no 2, 3, 4 and 5 of Nalagaad Municipality on August 14 swept away some 200-300 metres of cemented canal disrupting the power generation and its supply by the microhydro power projects in the locality. The flood caused damages to as many as six local micro hydropower projects such as 15-kilowatt Silipalauna Syala Dharmashala micro hydro, 45-kilowatts Baagmare micro hydro power project, 15-kilowatts Khumara Khola microhydro power project and 13-kilowatt Lahare micro hydropower project among others, informed ward no 4 Chairperson, Prachanda Oli. The flood also had damaged the irrigation canals and embankments besides the canals of six micro hydropower projects. Nalgad Municipality Mayor Tek Bahadur Rawal shared that around 4,000 locals in Ghuwara, Pipalchaur, Khantakura, Thapla, Kalimati Bazar and Dalli among others were deprived of electricity following the damage to the canals. World champion Chelimo wins women’s marathon at Asian Games

JAKARTA, Indonesia – World champion Rose Chelimo has won the Asian Games women’s marathon for Bahrain in a hot and humid race in the Indonesian capital. The Kenya-born Chelimo had a big lead by the 30-kilometer mark and won in 2 hours, 34 minutes and 51 seconds. Chelimo represented Kenya internationally before switching to represent Bahrain ahead of the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where she finished eighth. Two dead, 241 injured in 6.0 quake in western Iran: official

TEHRAN – Two people were killed and more than 200 injured in a strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck western Iran near the border with Iraq early Sunday, officials told local media. The shallow quake hit 26 kilometres (16 miles) southwest of the city of Javanrud in Kermanshah province, the US Geological Survey said, near the site of a powerful quake last year that killed hundreds.The head of the emergency department Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences, Saeb Sharidari, told state news agency IRNA that two people were killed and 241 people injured, six critically. Sharidari said the two dead were a pregnant woman and a 70-year-old man who died of a heart attack.The provincial head of the Red Crescent, Mohammad Reza Amirian, said there had been at least 21 aftershocks. He said there were potential problems with drinking water due to damaged infrastructure in villages, but that it had not yet been necessary to distribute food and tents. Kermanshah governor Houshang Bazvand told the Tasnim news agency that electricity had been temporarily cut to several villages. NC told to amend its statute to ensure 33% seats to women

  Kathmandu – The Nepal Women’s Association has asked for 33 per cent seats to women from ward to the central levels in the Nepali Congress. At a programme organized in the capital city on Sunday evening to mark the 22nd memorial day of Association’s founding chairperson late Mangala Devi Singh , the speakers said that one thirds of the seats should be ensured to the women. On the occasion, Nepali Congress leader Prakashman Singh said that the women should pile pressure on the leadership for the party’s statute amendment for women’s rights. “You (women) move ahead in an organized manner for the women’s rights. I am in your side,” Singh said. Likewise, Nepali Congress leader Ambika Basnet said that time has come for further struggle since the women in Nepal were still unsecured. She also urged the women to unite to fight against the violence against women.
