Kathmandu – India’s Supreme Court has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nepal’s Supreme Court to develop, promote, and strengthen judicial cooperation between the two countries.

The MoU was signed on Monday in the presence of Nepal’s Chief Justice, Justice Prakashman Singh Raut, and India’s Chief Justice, Justice Sanjiv Khanna. Inspired by the cordial and friendly relations between the two nations and their people, this MoU aims to foster the development, promotion, and strengthening of cooperation between the judiciaries of both countries.

The MoU will encourage the exchange of mutual information regarding recent developments in the fields of law and justice, as well as promote interactions between judges and officials at various levels through programs such as exchange visits, short-term and long-term training, and educational programs.

Incorporating the importance of technology to complete pending tasks, expedite court procedures, and provide better services to stakeholders, the MoU also establishes provisions for sharing information related to the technology used by the respective courts and institutions. According to the MoU, a joint task force consisting of officials from both judiciaries will be formed to promote and further strengthen judicial cooperation, as well as to prepare plans and frameworks for this purpose.

The Indian government and the Indian Supreme Court have previously signed MoUs for judicial cooperation with the Supreme Courts of Israel, the Republic of Singapore, Bangladesh, Bhutan, the governments of Tunisia, Zambia, Morocco, the Maldives, and other countries and institutions.
