Kathmandu- The Secretary-General of the Commonwealth has invited Nepal to consider joining the Commonwealth, highlighting the potential economic and commercial benefits of closer engagement with its member countries.
She made the remarks during a special meeting with a delegation of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SAARC CCI) at Marlborough House in London. She had specially come to meet SAARC CCI President Chandi Raj Dhakal and members of the delegation.
During the meeting, the Secretary-General expressed heartfelt condolences to the people of Nepal over the loss of lives and conveyed her sympathies to the Government and people of Nepal during this difficult time.
She said stronger engagement with the Commonwealth could help Nepal expand trade, investment, economic cooperation and international business partnerships. She also highlighted the Commonwealth’s extensive global network and its potential to create new economic opportunities for Nepal.
The Secretary-General said she would hold a formal meeting with the SAARC CCI delegation on Wednesday to explore ways to strengthen cooperation and networks between the two organisations.
SAARC CCI President Chandi Raj Dhakal thanked the Secretary-General for her condolences and for taking the time to meet the delegation. He welcomed the Commonwealth’s interest in strengthening economic engagement with Nepal and the wider South Asian region.
The meeting also discussed opportunities to enhance cooperation in trade, investment, connectivity and private-sector partnerships between South Asian countries and Commonwealth member states.
