Hetauda — Indra Bahadur Baniya, leader of the Nepali Congress parliamentary party, has been appointed as the sixth Chief Minister of Bagmati Province.
Baniya was appointed to the post today by Province Chief Deepak Prasad Devkota.
On Monday, Baniya submitted his claim to form the government with the support of 64 provincial assembly members. Among them, 37 were from the Nepali Congress and 27 from the CPN-UML. A majority of 56 members is required to form the government in the 110-member Bagmati Provincial Assembly.
Following the approval of the resignation of former Chief Minister Bahadur Singh Lama, the Province Chief had called for claims to form a new government. In response, Baniya submitted his claim with a majority.
Baniya, who is also the president of the Nepali Congress Bagmati Province Committee, has been actively involved in provincial politics for a long time. He is widely recognized as an experienced and capable leader with strong organizational skills.
