Kathmandu, July 19- The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government to make arrangement for free and effective treatment to the doctors, students and police who were injured in a clash that ensued while bringing hunger striker Prof Dr Govinda KC from Jumla to Kathmandu.
Issuing a press release here today, NHRC Spokesperson Mohana Ansari said it came to the knowledge of the Commission that the clash ensued when police baton charged the crowd while obstruction was caused to Karnali State Chief Minister Mahendra Bahadur Shahi, Law Minister Naresh Bhandari and security personnel in the fasting site and the NHRC issued oral directive to the Home Ministry to stop baton charge from police in the hospital.
Stating that the violence and use of coercive force would not protect human rights, the NHRC urged the government to address the issue through meaningful dialogue.
Meanwhile, Nepal Medical Association (NMA) has expressed grief over the incident of leaving general public including doctors injured while airlifting Prof Dr KC to Kathmandu from Jumla.
Noting that it was saddening to thrash and injure health workers and general public against the assumption that ‘force shall not be used in sensitive zone like hospital’, NMA general-secretary Dr Lochan Karki said it was wrong on part of the government to forcibly lift Prof Dr KC from the fasting site against his will in breach of his human rights.
The NMA has also urged the government to show sensitivity by booking the guilty of the incident and providing necessary arrangement for treatment to the injured.
