Kathmandu, May 21 (RSS): Nepal has obtained the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s certificate for the elimination of trachoma. Minister of State for Health and Population, Padma Aryal, received the certificate during the WHO ongoing 71 General Assembly at its Geneva-based headquarters in Switzerland on May 20. She was conferred the certificate by WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, as told by her personal secretary Rajesh Sharma.
Minister of State Aryal reached Geneva, leading the Nepali delegation to the general assembly. On the occasion, the two held discussions about health practices turned successful in Nepal the past, achievements and other plans. The Minister of State called on the WHO for its special technical support to Nepal in formulation and development of health related policies and methods and for participation of Nepali experts in building of WHO policies, plans and programmes. The WHO Director-General said he was happy to hear the good news that Nepal was successful in eliminating trachoma as in Kala-azar.
According to the WHO report, Trachoma, an infectious disease is responsible, at present, for approximately 3% of the world’s blindness.
